Wall Art: Today’s Tile Trends – Kitchen & Bath Design News

While white subway tile may never go out of style, today’s tile offering goes far beyond the classic look of clean and slightly utilitarian. Bold solids, intricate patterns and undulating textures are elements in current tile selections, and all are being embraced by designers and homeowners alike.

Porcelain, ceramic, cement, glass, metal, stone and even recycled materials are part of the tile scene, with each adding its own nuances to the appearance and feel of the piece. From perfectly matched tiles to embraced imperfections, tile offerings provide the distinctive look being sought.

Arabescato Venato Slat 4″x12″ Wall Tile from MSI is a marble tile that blends warm white, creamy taupe and dusky gray tones. The contemporary fluted design plays with light, while the honed finish adds a touch of sophistication, notes the firm.

The Omega series by Cerlat, S.A. is white stoneware, designed for bathrooms where materials that are easy to clean and maintain are vital, states the company. This vintage tile comes in 10 finishes and three size formats.

Inspired by artist Nada Debs’ work in hammam design, Transcendence by KOHLER WasteLAB is comprised of two field tiles, a 3″x12″ size in four patterns, and a 6″x6″ size in three patterns. Debs selected two shades for the collection – Turquoise and Lake.

XLIGHT is Porcelanosa’s large-format porcelain available in extra slim sizes that recreate the look of cement, marble, stone, wood and metal. This technical porcelain tile is offered in four finishes – polished, silk, textured and natural. XLIGHT is available in 24″x47″, 47″x47″ or 47″x106″ and comes in two thicknesses – 6 or 9 mm.

Handmade from start to finish, Mercury Mosaics’ Mid-Mod Squares are a collection of subway tiles, semicircles and glaze blends that create a mid-century modern tile design. Mid-Mod Squares are available in four signature blends or full customization through the brand’s ‘Blends by You’ program.

Villa Lagoon Tile’s 24″ handcrafted Terrazzo Tile Slabs are available in 16 patterns, including six new colorways – Cane, Dorsoduro, Pompano, Palm Springs, Sedona and Venezia. The tile slabs incorporate marble chips, glass, shells, natural stones or other materials.

The tones of the Marmetta collection from Gayafores include two neutrals – gray and cream, suitable for recreating soft and discreet atmospheres, and an intense black that gives an elegant rotundity to the space, states the company.

Exclusive to Ann Sacks, the handcrafted Terossa terra cotta designs of the Terossa Collection are decoratively inlaid with waterjet cut pieces of marble or limestone. The stones’ warm colorations produce a tile that resonates with Old World character, states the firm.

Calligo from Daltile embodies the natural essence of travertine stone with the convenience and longevity of tile. A dimensional environment can be created with the 12″x24″ fluted wall tile, which introduces a play of light and shadow, while the 15″x”30″ floor tile and the 1″x6″ mosaic provides a modern backdrop.

The RIVA Tile Wood Collection from RIVA Spain features porcelain tiles in seven color options: Pearl, Cotton, Crystal, Sand, Smoke, Earth and Amber. Measuring 10″x60″, the tiles are designed to match RIVA MAX natural wood flooring, which is sourced sustainably from European forests.

Combine the master potter’s craft of handmade surface with a defined, sophisticated edge and the result is The Studio Collection from Adex USA, notes the firm. The line includes highly embossed decos, artfully painted surfaces and three-dimensional trims.

Suitable for flooring, walls and showers, MATERIAL Bespoke Stone + Tile’s Arabescato is a classic marble that brings a touch of Italian allure. The background features shades of white, punctuated by an active gray veining, often in rounded or oval patterns.

Crossville’s Trajectory is a concrete-look porcelain tile available in a curated palette of four colors – Direction, Path, Flight and Flow. Trajectory comes in a range of sizes, including 12″x24″ and 24″x24″ field tiles, both rectified for precision installation. The design can be enhanced with complementing mosaics.

The Accent Bleu collection from Walker Zanger features exotic blues in natural stone, complemented by the white of Thassos marble. A classic color palette combines blues with whites alongside intricate tile designs. The collection includes five mosaic patterns, two field tiles and two trims.

The Mistral collection from Lunada Bay Tile reinterprets the heritage of Zellige tiles for the modern day. Mistral tiles, which are made completely by hand, are available in four mosaic patterns – Bab, Reverie, Kilim and Trapezium – and six colors.

The San Marco collection pays homage to the Italian lineage of New Ravenna. The collection features the beauty and detailing of Byzantine mosaics, gilded accents, ancient geometric designs, Venetian lace, marble terrazzo and decorative stucco.

Artaic’s Designs on Demand features a selection of designs from the company’s mosaics with patterned designs for a mosaic experience. Three designs are featured: SoHo Stripe in Turquoise, Pewter and Coastal; Adana in Cabana, Dawn and Lavender; and Retrograde in Dawn, Pewter, Cobalt and Cabana.

Located in Ann Arbor, MI, Motawi Tileworks makes handcrafted tile as art pieces, specializing in Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts and Mid Century Modern aesthetics. Motawi tiles are sold in over 300 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Designed by fashion designer Trina Turk, known for her vibrant and modern designs inspired by the California lifestyle, the Durell Kiwi 8″ Cement Tile from Tesselle is available in 16 cement tile and three breeze block designs.

Each glazed porcelain tile in the Martel collection from Emser Tile boasts a unique glazing, reminiscent of handcrafted artistry, ensuring no two pieces are identical. Martel is available in two sizes and four colors: Snow, River, Bark and Garden.

Artistic Tile’s Game On Collection is designed by Michelle Gerson and features a bold return to basic shapes with unexpected touches. The collection features four customizable designs – Spot-On, Slide, Zip and Stix – each available in a range of sizes in both mosaic form and as large-format tile.

Florida Tile’s Bellanova is a new line of color-body porcelain tiles that captures the timeless elegance of European Oak, also known as Rovere wood, in five hues: Foam, Crema, Honey, Macchiato and Espresso. Bellanova is available in 8″x48″ planks and a modern linear mosaic, designed to emulate ribbed-slat wall paneling.

Designed in-house, each of Otto Tiles’ exclusive ranges offers a rich palette of colors, textures and patterns for wet and dry areas. From the vibrancy of its Signature Cement tiles to the subtle elegance and organic appeal of its Moroccan Zellige and Signature Marble creations designed to inspire and transform, Otto Tiles & Design carefully balances the old with the new, the firm states.

Devon&Devon’s Elite Flooring is a collection of handcrafted floorings and wall coverings that reinterprets the traditional art of mosaic in a contemporary style. The combination of marbles with contrasting colors generates sophisticated geometric patterns, available in a wide range of compositional and chromatic variations, notes the firm.

With the Premiere series, Colorker carries the ceramic reformulation of slate to the next level, with surfaces with more noticeable tone variations and full of nuances, notes the company. The cladding products are available in the cold color range, Light and Dark, which is more typical of natural slate, and a warmer version, Cream, for cozy spaces, the firm adds.

Marazzi’s Rhyme and Reason collection of glazed ceramic wall tiles features a deep biophilic color palette, including Indigo, Canvas, Artichoke, Warm Terracotta and Bone. The line includes a 6″x6″ square wall tile and a 4″x5″ hexagon wall tile.

The Arte series from Arizona Tile is a glossy white body ceramic offered in a traditional subway tile. The subway tiles can be used in both traditional as well as modern design installations for an updated look. Offered in four light, neutral colors, it is recommended to use a coordinating grout color for all colors in the Arte series.

Nemo Tile + Stone’s Celine collection offers an array of porcelain tile options, including four marble colors ranging from classic whites to grays in three finishes, complemented by 12 decorative motifs. The collection offers different designs in various size formats, including 48″x48″, 24″x48″ and 48″x112″ sizes.

Designed in collaboration with Michele McMinn, Gresham Smith Studio Design Lead and Partner, MILE®stone’s imprint collection was inspired by clay as an origin material and the imprint humans leave upon it. The line offers four color schemes – Intaglio, Strata, Raw Earth and Underglazed Ombre. The tiles are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses.

Premier Copper Products offers over a dozen styles of handmade copper tile in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs. Attention to detail is shown in each of its hand-hammered products, making them one-of-a-kind pieces. Custom order backsplashes and other products are also available, the company reports.
